Album Release & Tour: Tess Parks & Anton Newcombe

Upcoming Album Release: The Brian Jonestown Massacre – Revelation

With the release of Revelation on the 19th of May (30th in Germany) The Brian Jonestown Massacre will present their 13th studio album. Anton Newcombe, the band’s mastermind produced it by himself at the A Recording Studios in his neighborhood. The founding father is notorious for outliving more than 40 band members in the 20-odd years of BJM’s career. His writing style is described by the man himself as a process which allows to free his manic energy and gets him into character the way an actor would.

“Now it’s just about me and my ideas. And to be able to do that, for me, is a revelation.” Newcombe points out. During last years he changed his lifestyle to a more sober one and now lives with his wife Katy and fifteen-month-old son Wolfgang in Berlin. On Revelation he processes certain parts of this new chapter in his life. With his current bandmembers Ricky Maymi, Joakim Åhlund, Constantine Karlis and Ryan Van Kriedt he has created a more garage-psych-oriented sound mixed with different influences. This neo–psychedelic, shoegaze sounds fill the listener with a warm secure feeling.

“I make music because, to a large extent, the music that I want to hear doesn’t exist unless I create it,” he shrugs. “That’s changed over the years… but I still think it’s true.”

The first song on the new album Vad hände med dem? – in English What happened to them? – is the result of Anton Newcombe’s work with Joakim  Åhlund and Ryan Carlson. The Swedish lyrics fit in line with the previous albums, which also include Scandinavian languages. Oriental influences make the album a playground of discoveries. In each track you find different original instrument arrangements. Especially the instrumental song Second Sighting reminds me of tunes connected with the middle age. All in all Revelation is an album of different moods, unbound time and genres.

After being headliner at The Austin Psych Fest at the beginning of May The Brian Jonestown Massacre are now touring through Europe and stop in Germany in June.

Discovered: The Blue Angel Lounge

After moving to and recording in Berlin their third album A Sea of Trees has just been released. The Blue Angel Lounge’s inspirations depend to a large extent on the work of The Velvet Underground. Nils Ottensmeyer’s distinctive, powerful voice is often described as ‘nico’esque’ – how fitting, as they take their name from the club in New York where Nico did her first live performances.

Since the foundation in 2006 in Hohenlimburg, Western Germany, the band quickly developed their dark psychedelic sound and collected a wide range of experiences, including a US support tour for The Brian Jonestown Massacre and festivals such as Austin Psych Fest, Roskilde and Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg. After the international breakthrough in the UK, US and France, now even Germany actually realizes the potential of their musical masterpieces. The band’s new album contains  elegic, spherical carpets of sounds and rhythmic monotony that casts a spell on the listener. Combinations of guitar lines with harmonium tunes are carried through whole the work.

Eleven pieces of mystical preachings by sermonizer Ottensmeyer are embedded in a cloud of instrumental experiences and driven by a constant rhythm that stops in time to continue the walk through another world, a world that seems unexplored. The Blue Angel Lounge know the ropes, how to guide dark trips along a small ridge that splits abyss and ecstasy. For the song ‘Mutter’ the language switches to German. The lyrics deal with big sorrows rooted in the past and connect the origin with the present and future. ‘Walls’ continues with the topic, treating the difficulty of looking through walls consisting of illusionary safety. But these are just my assumptions. The songs are written in a way everybody is able to rediscover and feel themselves in it. A Sea of Trees picks you up from where you’re situated and takes you on a journey into the unknown.

Discovered: The Preatures

The british Guardian has already catapulted The Preatures to the status of New Band Of The Year 2013. Their debut single Is This How You Feel quickly became a radio-runner in their home country Australia and won the first price in a renowned local songwriter competition. In the meantime the quintet fronted by Isabella Manfredi launched an international music career. Their special indie-pop sound includes parts of 70s disco funk along with very danceable rock’n’roll ingredients. The most protruding feature of their music is the energetic voice of natural stage beauty Manfredi. Having heated up lots of festivals the last months, the newcomers from Down Under will present us their first album on 24 February in Hamburg. You can expect a lot!
